BABY BITES

Before feeding your baby solids, check with your doctor for reccomendations. Our pediatrician wanted us to start giving Tilman samples of "solids" once he turned 4 months old. We slowly added in more variety and larger quantities. Here's a basic guide as to what your baby can have and when...

FIRST FOODS: rice, barely, oats, apples, pears, bananas, avocados, sweet potatoes, squash, green beans

6-8 MONTHS: All above foods, plus: mangoes, peaches, plums, prunes, pumpkin, carrots, peas, zucchini, turkey, tofu

8-10 MONTHS: All above foods, plus: flax, quinoa, millet, toast, Cheerios, blueberries, cantaloupe, melon, cherries, cranberries, figs, grapes, kiwi, papaya, asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, eggplant, potato, onions, peppers, mushrooms, beans, legumes, beef, pork, lentils, pastas, egg yolk

10-12 MONTHS: All above foods, plus: citrus, artichokes, beets, corn, cucumbers, spinach, tomatoes, egg whites (at 1 year), white fish

*Tilman's doctor allowed us to give him nut butters, Greek yogurt & cottage cheese starting at 6 months. His thought is that introducing these foods earlier could prevent food allergies.

*Tip: Whenever introducing new foods, do so earlier in the day and watch closely for any reaction. Stick with one new food for a few days before trying out another newbie... that way, if there is a reaction, you will know what caused it.

*Don't give up: If baby doesn't like a food... keep trying for a total of 10 times before giving it up. Try 3-4 times, give it a break and then go back to it again. Try mixing the new item with a current fav.

RECIPES
*I use a baby food maker for steaming and blending, but you can always steam the ingredients and then blend or place in a food processor.

BERRY YOGURT

What you need:
1C plain Greek yogurt
1C organic berries of choice
Optional: 1TBSP nut butter, flaxseeds or coconut oil for added nutrition

How to:
Blend & store

EGG YOLK OATMEAL PANCAKE
*Serve once baby can "gum" foods. He/she doesn't have to have teeth yet
Recipe makes 2 small pancakes

2 egg yolks (babies under 1 shouldn't have egg whites)
2TBSP quick oats, uncooked
1TBSP Greek yogurt
dash of cinnamon

How to:
Combine all ingredients in a little bowl and cook on a skillet. I use coconut oil to grease skillet first. Top with nut butter, pureed fruit or a little pure maple syrup.

BABY HUMMUS
Makes about 1 Cup. I mix this into Tilman's veggies

What you need:
1 can organic garbanzo beans
juice from 1/2 lemon
1/2 TBSP seasame seeds
1 tsp crushed garlic
1 tsp extra virgin olive oil
a dash of sea salt & pepper

Optional flavor idea:
LEMON BASIL: Add in 1/4C fresh basil leaves & a little extra lemon juice
ROASTED RED PEPPER: Add in 1 small grilled red pepper
CILANTRO AVOCADO: Add in 1/4C chopped cilantro & 1/2 ripe avocado

How to:
Combine all ingredients into a baby food maker, food processor or blender and mix well until smooth.

COCONUT PEAS

2C frozen peas

BELL PEPPER SCRAMBLE
Makes 1 serving

What you need:
1 egg yolk
1TBSP diced bell pepper
1tsp coconut oil

How to:
Grease skillet with oil. Sautee pepper until very soft (especially if baby is still toothless ;-)). Add in egg and cook for a minute or two.

*I serve this with a side of pureed fruit

FAMILY STEELCUT OATS
*Big batch recipe to feed the family for several days
Mama & baby's oats, topped with Greek yogurt

What you need:
2C steelcut oatmeal
1 can organic light coconut milk
4C water (start w 3C if added frozen fruit & add more if needed)
1TBSP pure vanilla extract

Optional mix-ins:
1/2C unsweetened canned pumpkin & cinnamon to taste
2 small organic apples, diced & cinnamon to taste
2C berry of choice
1/4C flaxseeds

How to:
Combine all ingredients into a crockpot & cook on low for 6-8 hours (all crockpots cook differently so adjust time and heat to suit your pot). Check every couple hours and add more water if needed.

BASIL SQUASH MEDLEY
What you need:
1 organic yellow squash
1 organic zucchini
a few fresh basil leaves

How to:
Steam veggies & combine with basil in baby food maker.

*I often serve this with mixed brown rice to make it a little thicker, because the squash can blend up pretty watery.
